The M2-2 Flame Thrower first entered service in July of 1944, and was an improvement over its earlier predecessors, the M1A1 and M1 models. The flame thrower became an essential component in the Allied arsenal. Powered by compressed air and fueled with diesel fuel, the flame thrower was very effective in neutralizing pillboxes, bunkers and caves. Because of its limited range and short duration of fire, it had to be used in conjunction with other weapons in order to be effective. Flame thrower operators were also favorite targets of the enemy, and it was necessary to provide covering fire for the operator to get close enough to perform his duties!
